Ultrasound

Ultrasound or sonography is a very useful diagnostic tool in women's health. It is often the most useful imaging for pelvic anatomy. It has no known harmful health affects that might occur from the radiation used in other imaging. This makes it especially suited for use in pregnancy. Various conditions can be diagnosed while the fetus is still in the womb, allowing for the arrangement of the optimal conditions for mother and fetus prior to delivery.

Gynecologic conditions can also be diagnosed most of the time with the aid of sonography. Ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors (leiomyomas), uterine polyps, congenital abnormalities, and female cancers can be diagnosed with the aid of ultrasound.

At Carteret Ob/Gyn we have a full time certified ultrasound technician, Debbie Brooks, who has over 15 years of ultrasound experience. Each of our physicians has extensive experience performing and interpreting ultrasound images. Having your ultrasound done here offers the advantage of having the interpretation done by the same doctor who will be making the recommendations for treatment. This decreases any communication problems between physicians. Ultrasound is comfortable and convenient at Carteret Ob/Gyn and can often be done at the same time as other testing such as lab work, mammography, and bone density testing. Insurance issues often interfere with our ability to do sonograms at the time of annual screening exams, but your sonogram can be conveniently scheduled at another time.

Ultrasound testing is also available at Carteret Ob/Gyn even if you do not regularly get your care in our office. Your doctor can order it for you.
