Bone Density Testing

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans or 55 percent of the people 50 years of age and older. In the U.S., 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis. People affected are at significant risk for bone fractures. Unfortunately the first symptom people experience is a painful bone fracture. This can be debilitating and require hospitalization, nursing home care, and a prolonged convalescence. Up to on third are not fortunate enough to recover at all and die from conditions related to the trauma.

Fortunately there is testing available to detect bone loss before a person suffers from a fracture. There are a variety of medicines available that have been shown to improve the density of bone and decrease fractures.

Bone density testing is simple, painless, and convenient at Carteret Ob/Gyn. Our Hologic ™ DEXA machine can adjust for both sex and race, giving the most accurate measurements of your bone density.
